Bio

Catherine Lemaire Lozier is a studio potter in Nashville, TN. Drawing inspiration from historical decorative arts, Catherine embellishes her pieces with hand carved, inlaid illustrations. She combines botanical motifs with imagery sourced from folktales, fairy tales, and mythology.

Using a variation on the Japanese Mishima technique, Catherine inlays her designs by first carving them freehand and then coating the pot in a contrasting color of slip, which fills the carved lines. She then cuts off the layer of slip, leaving the color in the carved recesses only. This process leaves a soft, furrowed texture on the surface of each piece, producing one-of-a-kind pots that are designed to be both beautiful and practical.

A Nashville native, Catherine studied anthropology, women's studies, and ceramics at Guilford College in North Carolina. She attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville Tennessee, earning her BFA. She works out of her home studio in East Nashville.

Statement

My work is grounded in the practices of studio pottery and inspired by the historical decorative arts. I start with a traditional blue and white floral design and then try to sneak little bits of my world view and sense of humor into the imagery on my pots. I love to think about the ways that my customers will use my pottery in their homes, and I continually challenge myself to improve on my designs, making them more practical or more beautiful.
